A sampling of some projects we have done:
Work Design
- Design of work systems that integrate computer-based process modeling and analysis of social systems of work in a telecommunications company. Conducted multiple work system design projects within the firm, including the redesign of T.1 provisioning, and implementation of process re-engineering (putting "50,000 foot" strategy into effective practice). (Nynex Corporation, now Verizon)
- Led internal design team in design and development of new work system, organizational redesign, and the design of space (work environment) in support of the work design. (Pitney Bowes)
Embed Capability
- Social Capital Consulting. Conducted project with large insurance company in proof-of-concept project on managing for Social Capital (in alliance with the Strategic Practices Group, Inc.). Worked alongside employees of client for four months to develop their capability to analyze Social Capital themselves. Provided ongoing, consultative support. (A large insurance company)
- Apprenticeship. Developed an in-house apprenticeship program for a Fortune 500 firm, working with the training department, to extend the capabilities of the existing staff. Work included incorporating adapted anthropological field methods for use inside the company, for purposes of designing a wide range of flexible learning solutions (e.g., not only classroom training) that fit the work. (Xerox Corporation, through the Institute for Research on Learning)
Change Management
- Put re-engineering plans into practice through participation of on-the-ground teams who collectively figured out implications of "design at 50,000 feet" for their work. (Nynex)
- New job creation. Often, the redesign of work systems can create new jobs. We worked internally with multiple corporate resources, including helping resolve union-company issues concerning new job creation. (Nynex, Pitney Bowes)
Evaluation and Assessment
- Conducted assessment of "learning maps" (visual displays of strategy maps to disseminate strategic intent throughout a firm) by working with employees at their work sites after map review sessions. Learning maps were used as a device for spreading understanding throughout a large organization in times of turbulence in the larger industry. (Bank of Montreal)
- Conduct "reconnaissance missions" where we send a SWAT team to get the lay of the land and help companies conceptualize projects and initiatives. (Nynex, Pitney Bowes)
